Speech #660127980

President. I do not know exactly where they draw the line. I want to say frankly. although it may be a -little shocking. that I am entirely opposed to the principle of deportation for any reason. If we admit aliens into this country. it is our business to take care of them and to deal with them ourselves from that time on. That is one part of the white mans burden which it seems to me we should assume. I look upon deportation as ineffective and more or less shirking. responsibility. If we once admit people to this country. we should take upon ourselves the burden of teaching them the worth of- our institutions and of making them good citizens. If they are incorrigible criminals. then we have penitentiaries. insane asylums. and electric chairs of our own.
