Session #64 · 1915–17

Speech #640251624

I will tell the Senator from South Carolina what this proposition does to the Immigration Committee. The clerk of the Immigration Committee now gets a salary of $2.220. That is just the same as all the secretaries of all these unimp6rtant committees get. and is exactly the amount that I provide. The assistant secretary gets $1.800. so I cut that down to $1.440 under my amendment. I desire to say that the Immigration Committee has had one bill of very great importance before it in the last two or three Congresses. When that bill shall have been disposed of. as we hope it will be at this session. so far as reports or anything of that kind are concerned. that committee. it seems to me. will not have any more business than other committees to which I have referred.
