Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530163937

I am very much in sympathy with the objects of this bill. and I wish to make a suggestionto the Senator from New York. In the naturalization laws. which have stood upon the statute books ever since the formation of the Government. the language of the old mandate has always been preserved. The language at the bottom of page 3 of the bill is partially copied from the naturalization laws. The bill reads: The presiding judge shall certify that from the evidence produced at the trial he is satisfied that such alien is an anarchist. or thathe is not attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States and well disposed to the peace and good order of the same. The bill follows the language that has been on the statute books.
