Two. both Jews. were sentenced to death and the other nine were given harsh prison terms. Appeals were soon launched by outraged governments and peoples around the world. They based their arguments in defense of these individuals on the grounds that they had wished only to exercise their legal right to emigrate and that the restrictive policies of the Soviet Union were at fault. Although the campaign to reduce their sentences began quietly. soon an international outcry was heard. The protests. some of which were headed by some of my colleagues in the Congress. told the Soviets that we will not stand by and watch the persecution of Soviet Jews.
