Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530131993

Mr. Chairman. I rise in support of the PanettaMorrison amendment. I represent a district with significant agricultural interests that require seasonal workers to harvest timesensitive crops. To the farmers I represent. this is probably the most critical amendment to be offered to the immigration bill. Without it. I fear the consequences of this legislation on the agricultural economy of the Northwest. It could mean disaster for perishable fruit and vegetable growers. Family farms that have operated for generations will have crops rotting in their fields. The PanettaMorrison amendment was carefully drafted to protect both the domestic work force and the foreign worker.
