Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530116995

Nobody but a man of more than average purpose and courage would have undertaken the journey of 3.000 miles through a hostile Indian country at that time. and consequently very few except picked men came to Callfornia. Those men were all libertyloving men. and they have spread out all over this coast. and have given character to the entire population. including the population of British Columbia. Their characteristics were so strong. their personalities were so strong. that they have been able to lend character practically to all this immigration since that time. So that thousands and hundreds of thousands of peole who have come here since then. after they have livedhere a little while. have imbibed the opinions and interests of the class of men whom we call Argonauts. and they are called Pacific coast people. no matter where they come from.
