If the Senators argument is good for anything. that we pay higher wages than are paid in Canada. it naturally follows that Canadian labor would come to the American side to engage in the labor. and therefore the native and naturalized labor of America would be driven out or their wages would be materially affected by Canadian competition. I also asked the Senator what there was about the manufacture of lumber in Canada that made it cheaper to manufacture it there than it could be manufactured in Oregon or Washington. If the markets in this country were affected in the slightest degree by the importations of Canadian lumber. would not the consumers in the great prairie States. like Iowa.
