Had this system been in place on 9/11. we would have had a better chance of detecting the plotters before they struck. That is why it is important. We have long known that visa overstays pose a serious national security risk. A number of the hijackers on September 11 overstayed their visas. The number of visa overstays implicated in terrorism since that date is certainly a significant number. A new poll came out earlier this year that indicates that three out of four Americans not only want the Obama administration to find those aliens who overstay their visas but to also deport them. Why not? They came here for a limited period of time. We have a law that says they can stay for a certain amount of time. It is not that hard to get a visa to the United States. but shouldnt they leave when their visa is up? Do they just get to stay here and take a job. perhaps from an unemployed American citizen? The same poll indicates that 68 percent of Americans consider visa overstays as a "serious national security risk" and 31 percent consider visa overstays as a "very serious" national security risk. There is no doubt as to why. The risk to our national security is too high for us to maintain the status quo.
