Speech #1100123146

H.R. 997. the English Language Unity Act. and it establishes English as the official language of the United States of America. I have just made the case that we didnt need to do that in the early 1800s or the early 1900s. because the people of this country understood the utility of having a common language. English. and because many of the people who came here as legal immigrants adopted themselves to and adapted themselves to and assimilated themselves into an Englishspeaking culture. One of the examples would be my grandmother. who arrived here from Germany on March 26. 1894. and she walked through the Great Hall at Ellis Island. She came on the ship New York.
