Session #110 · 2007–09

Speech #1100100109

Eliminating these automatic cuts was at the top of the list of needed legislation by medical and health care groups. I am hopeful that we will address their concerns through another bill before the cuts go into effect. I am also deeply disappointed that Senate Republicans insisted on the removal of provisions providing coverage for the children of legal immigrants. Such discrimination based on immigrant status should have no place in a bill providing health care to children. While work remains to be done. I also want to point out that under this bill we would preserve the coverage of more than 20.000 children in Hawaii. and in addition 12.000 children in Hawaii who currently are uninsured would gain coverage.
