By allowing the Federal Govemnment jurisdiction in certain. limited cases of violent hate crime. this bill provides muchneeded support to local law enforcement agencies. This piece of legislation is particulariy important at a time when the number of hate groups has grown over the past years. The Southemn Poverty Law Center reported that the number of hate groups has seen a 40 percent increase since 2000 and attributed much of this growth to the immigration issue. Hate crimes that are motivated by bigotry and bias against minority populations affect entire families and communities. We must stand to protect our communities from hateful actions.
