Session #110 · 2007–09

Speech #1100042798

I will not stand for it as a Member of Congress with an opportunity to make a change and make a difference. Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel once said that "indifference is always the friend of the enemy. for it benefits the aggressornever his victim. whose pain is magnified when he or she is forgotten. The political prisoner in his cell. the hungry children. the homeless refugeesnot to respond to their plight. not to relieve their solitude by offering them a spark of hope is to exile them from human memory. And in denying their humanity. we betray our own. Indifference. then. is not only a sin. it is a punishment." In the past decade. our country has had men murdered merely because they were gay. disabled. or African American.
