So today we acknowledge the Sharps as American heroes. and I would add as heroes of humanity. Martha Sharp is the first American womanand she and Waitstill are only the second and third Americansto be added to the honor roll of 21.000 "righteous" gentiles. or nonJews. whose efforts saved countless lives during the Holocaust. We also commend the Unitarian Universality Service Committee. UUSC was founded to support the Sharps work and helped rescue Jews and other refugees from Nazi persecution. The organization has continued to do good work in support of human rights all over the world and is actively engaged in efforts to stop the genocide in Darfur. Sudan.
