France. where they helped smuggle January 22. 2007 CONGRI people across the Pyrenees into neutral Portugal. The escape routes that they established enabled hundreds of refugees to survive. Among those whom the Sharps saved from persecution and slaughter at the hands of the Nazis were many children. including Jewish children who are now elderly. living freely in America. and remember with gratitude the couple who saved their lives almost 70 years ago. I should note that the Sharps and others who worked to save Jews not only had to worry about the Nazis and the Gestapo.
