Mr. President. the Senate has an opportunity to take what could be a historic stand on reforming our immigration system. where many problems exist. including border security. ports. people coming into our country whom we cannot identify. posing a potential security risk from terrorists entering the United States. There are some 11 million undocumented aliens In the United States who are unwilling to step forward because of their concern of being prosecuted and deported. We have an economy which relies very heavily on immigrant labor. We have now come to the point where legislation has been introduced which tackles these problems. The majority leader has said there will be passionate arguments.
