Parents participate longer than they would in normal adult education classes and children receive the extra assistance they need to make sure they are ready to enter school or to overcome any difficulties they may currently be experiencing in school. These programs have been proven to be effective in families where children and their parents are of limited English proficiency. In fact. many Even Start programs successfully work with immigrant families. migrant families. and other families of limited English proficiency. I want to thank Congressman SMITH for his strong support of family literacy programs. His efforts to improve the quality of such programs in meeting the literacy needs of families should not go unnoticed.
