Mr. Speaker. I rise in opposition to the Voter Suppression Act. A better title for this bill is the "Voter Suppression Act." Not only will it discourage new citizens from exercising their rights. but it could easily prohibit naturalborn and naturalized citizens from voting. This bill hands control over voter lists to state and local officials with no requirements that they act in ways that are uniform and do not discriminate. Citizens could be purged from the voter rollsdenied their constitutional rightsimply because they had an "ethnicsounding" surname or because they live in a predominantly minority neighborhood. And what would be their recourse?
Identified stereotypes
Citizens with ethnic-sounding surnames or who live in minority neighborhoods will be purged from voter rolls.
