Many of the Hmong lost their lives. They suffered innumerable casualties. and lost their homeland to Communist forces. After the war. the Hmong were forced to live in refugee camps. many in substandard condlions. and were later brought to our country as political refugees. The process of assimilation to the United States has been especially difficult for the Hmong. One major setback for many. Is that their command of the English language is Insuffient to successfully complete the naturalization process. This Is partly because. up until the 1950s. the Hmong did not have a written language. which has made leaming to speak. read. and write the English language extremely difficult. Further. the EngilsheamIng process has been stymied by the high rate o1 illiteracy among the Hmong in their own native language.
