Mr. Speaker. I rise today with my colleagues to commemorate the 82d anniversary of the Armenian genocide. April 24. 1915. marks the symbolic beginning of the campaign to extinguish the Armenian population in the Ottoman Empire. Over the course of nine lg years. 1.500.000 Armenian men. women and children were deported. forced Into sieve labor. tortured. or exterminated. Another 500.000 had to flee their homes. some coming here to the United States. It Is imperative. therefore. that we. as the elected representatives of the people of the United States. recognize and commemorate the Genocide of the Armenian people. Some today deny that the Armenian gemcide ever occurred.
