Session #104 · 1995–97

Speech #1040196576

Senator BROWNs language is currently in the bill. and I believe. as I said. it is far better than the original 30day limit. But I do remain convinced the arguments that were so simple and compelling against the 30day time limit are equally compelling against the provision as it stands now. Let me talk about that. First. because the asylum system works. and works pretty wellI do not think there is any dispute about thatwe simply do not need a time limit for asylum seekers. As I stated. we acknowledged several years ago the asylum system was in fact broken and there were serious problems. Under the old system. people could get a work authorization simply by applying for asylum.
