I rise today in celebration of GermanAmerican Day which recognizes and honors the historical and cultural contributions of GermanAmericans to our society. Not only am I honored to commemorate this day because I am a proud member of the 300yearold GermanAmerican community. but as the sponsor of the legislation which designated this day. October 6. 1993. as GermanAmerican Day. I am also pleased to observe this important event. German immigrants were among the first groups to settle this great land when they arrived in the town they named Germantown. in Pennsylvania in the 1680s. Since then. GermanAmericans have participated in all walks of American life and have been crucial in defining the accomplishments and spirit of the United States.
