But we are also a country of great social invention. The distinguished Presiding Officer might not know. but we are the country that invented night school. And we invented it at the turn of century. Immigrants streaming into the United States of America wanted to learn English. learn about citizenship. and begin to learn skills to move up in our society. But they worked in sweat shops. they worked in mines. they did not have the opportunity to go to school. So the ingenuity of the Settlement House created night school and created a whole new way for people to help themselves.
