These workers are placing themselves at high risk. If their skin test is positive. they have no way of knowing if they have contracted drugsensitive TB or drugresistant TB. Transmission of resistant TB to health care workers and prison guards is now a fact of life. In one city. at least nine health workers have developed active drugresistant TB. and five of them have died. The majority of TB in cases in this epidemic occur among the racial and ethnic minorities. especially AfricanAmericans and Hispanics. and among children. young adults. immigrants. and refugees. The recession has clearly enlarged the susceptible population. TB also accompanies HIV infection.
