Over and over and over. he had to repeat. reshape. and reframe arguments to colleagues. for funding for AIDS research and care. for access to alternative therapies. for human rights at home and in other countries. for uncensored artistic expression. and against U.S. foreign policy aggression and invasions of other lands. TED was also a kind. caring. and loving man to his family and to his friends. As an immigrant fleeing persecution and hatred. he learned how important refuge is and how lifesustaining a community can be. And. in one of the worlds largest cities. rumored by many to be a tough place to survive. he thrived. TED through his work and his life. helped to create a sense of community that has sustained many who would otherwise have been cast aside.
