The 17 Israeli athletes who died at the hands of terrorists should remind us of the horrific consequences of acts of intolerance of religious. national. or ethnic differences. In light. of the ethnic cleansing we witness in the former Yugoslavia. the ongoing rioting aimed at immigrants in Rostock and other towns in eastern Germany. and the support enjoyed by some political figures who are harbingers of hate and divisiveness. this anniversary should serve as a symboho reminder that antiSemitism. racism. and fear of foreigners still exist. Moreover. in these hard economic times. xenophobic tensions flourish. In this new world order. Mr. President. traditional national boundaries are not so clear. The number of political and economic refugees grows. and will continue to do so amid the massive changes occurring throughout the world. I hope that some day diverse peoples will live in harmony. Now. however. we must be aware of the delicate nature of this enormous transition.
