More than 125 professors. department heads. university presidents and civic leaders have Joined the members of the Thomas Paine National Historical Association of New Rochelle. NY. and the Thomas Paine Society of England in endorsing Senate Concurrent Resolution 110. Mr. President. nearly 200 years ago. the man who made the first public call for the abolition of slavery died. In fact. it has been more than 100 since President Lincoln took that action. Thomas Paine. who immigrated to Pennsylvania from England. deserves the long overdue honor described in Senate Concurrent Resolution 110. Since I started this project in the 101st Congress. I have enjoyed hearing the personal observations about Paine from hundreds of people around our Nation and around the world.
