Ukrainian Catholics. and those of the Ukrainian orthodox faith in the past. The Freedom Support Act will help to alleviate some of the conditions that have led to the persecution of these individuals. In addition. in recognition of the fact that persecution is already occurring. this bill extends important provisions of U.S. law that grant these Individuals automatic refugee status for the purposes of admission to the United States. This status will enable them to escape dangerous situations that may arise by coming to the United States. By approving this legislation. we will continue our important leadership in the quest for freedom and democracy around the world.
