In the years from 19151923. the Government of the Ottoman Empire sought to eliminate the culture. language. the entire race of Armenians from the face of the Earth. On April 24. 1915. government officials rounded up and brutally murdered over 200 Armenian community leaders. During the next 8 years. the Ottoman Government was responsible for the deaths and deportation of twothirds of all Armenians in Anatolia. Armenian men who were conscripted in the Ottoman militia were disarmed. placed in labor camps. and eventually executed. The remaining men. women. elders. and children were forced on long death marches through the Syrian desert where hundreds of thousands were killed by execution or starvation.
