But during these times of global change. we must continue to speak out against injustices like those imposed upon the approximately 4.000 Jews in Syria. As a signatory to the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. Syria is obligated to allow its citizens to emigrate freely. Yet Jews in Syria are denied this right. Today. if a Syrian Jew wants to travel abroad. he must leave a deposit with the Syrian secret police. the Mukhabarat. to ensure his return.
