Mr. Speaker. I rise today to call attention to the tragic plight of the 4.000 Syrian Jews who live in fear and Isolation. They are denied basic civil liberties and human rights. They are prevented from emIgrating freely and the few Jews who are per. mitted to travel abroad are required to put up a substantial monetary deposit and leave family members behind to assure their return. Jews who have sought to leave the country. despite the restrictions. have been subject to severe reprisals. Those who are caught are usually tortured. Imprisoned. and killed. In 1974. four single Jewish women trying to leave Syria were disfigured and murdered.
