Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020136808

We cannot and will not be satisfied until the legitimate government is restored to Haiti. We must continue to work with the OAS to reach that goal. Until then. we must stop the forced return of Haitian refugees. It is my feeling from the people we spoke with in Haitiincluding elected officials. representatives of relief agencies. and church officialsthat the refugees are not simple economic refugees. They have become refugees because of political oppression. There is a climate of fear. of political repression in Haiti. These refugees have sold everything they have. risked their lives to travel across sharkinfested waters in flimsy boats. and have sought asylum upon our shores. We must not turn them away. We must do what we can to help these innocent people.
