Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020121771

Mr. President. I am pleased to join my friends. the Senator from Arizona. Senator DECONCINI and the chairman of the Immigration and Refugee Affairs Subcommittee. Senator KENNEDY. in introducing temporary protected status legislation for Haiti. The military coup in Haiti represents a sad chapter in Haitis history. Less than 1 year ago. the free election of President Aristide gave many in Haiti hope for a better future. The violence in Haiti indicates that this military junta has very little support among the people. I support the administrations decision not to recognize this military coup and to withhold assistance to Haiti while this illegitimate government is in power.
