Jews are taken to police headquarters where they are beaten and tortured for simple suspicion of attempting to leave the country. Right now. there are six Syrian Jews in prison for attempting to leave Syria. Two of those have been Incarcerated for almost 5 years. My hope is that the passage of this resolution will send a strong message to Syrian President Hafez alAssad. who ha. in the past ignored repeated efforts by the President. the State Department. and Members of Congress. Any movement on this issue by Assad would be a strong Indication of his sincerity in future peace negotiations with Israel. I urge all my colleagues to join me in supporting freedom of emigration for Syrian Jews.
