Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020102455

Soon oil will be missing completely in Haiti. and there is an extreme shortage of food and medicine. And as usual. the poorest of the poorest nation in this hemisphere are feeling the crunch. What we have to do is to implore that the executive branch open up its doors as well as its heart to the many Haitians that find themselves leaving. some on the high seas. others in the United States in fear of deportation. For yei.s we have said that Haitians were different. not because of color. but because the asylum they sought was for economic reasons. I think it is abundantly clear that as difficult as it is to distinguish economic fear from political fear. the Haitians now live in fear of both. and that we should relax our laws and give them safe haven.
