Speech #1020087660

Fourth of July parades have been part of Buttes cultural tradition since 1876. when the residents of this young mining town gathered to celebrate our Nations centennial. During this period. the silver and gold booms fostered great interest in Butte. and the small community grew and diversified. Easterners and immigrants settled here hoping to strike lodes of ore. and created an even richer vein of Butte culture. varied and unified at once. and vested with pride in a young. vigorous America. As the towns population grew. so did its enthusiasm for community celebrations. The energetic Independence Day celebrations of the early 1900s established Butte as the center of Montanas Fourth of July activity. In 1937. the city of Butte began sponsoring the Independence Day parade. but by 1956. found financing difficult.
