Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020087185

First. Members of this Chamber fought vigorously on behalf of Soviet Jewry. and we should not rest on our laurels. The presently high levels of Jewish emigration we are experiencing should not be taken for granted. Soviet Jews have been persecuted for many years. and receiving exist visas for this group has traditionally been a painstaking and difficult process. The situation in the Soviet Union and the various Republics is in a state of flux. and it is imperative that Soviet Jews leave when the door is open. It seems all too plausible that the ethnic strife. nationalism. and political events in the U.S.S.R. could create a internal situation in which this group is again persecuted. or not allowed to leave certain regions of the country for various reasons.
