Turkish troops invaded and occupied northern Cyprus. Today. over 25.000 Turkish troops remain there. The troops occupy nearly 40 percent of the Island even though only 18 percent of the population : Turkish Cypriot. Thousands of Greek Cypriots became refugees as a result of the invasion. A barbed wire fence. known as the green line. cuts across the island separating thousands of Greek Cypriots from the towns and communities that their families lived in for generations. Although President Bush pledged to help resolve the unjust situation In Cyprus this year. he has yet to propose a plan to achieve this.
