Mr. Speaker. I would like to take this opportunity to honor the 85th birthday of a great Americanthe distinguished former Senator from Californiathe Honorable S.I. Hayakawa. Senator Hayakawa is a naturalized American. born in Canada of Japanese parents. He was once denied entry into the United States because of his Japanese ancestry. Senator Hayakawa reflected on those years in a letter he wrote to me recently. part of which I would like read into the RECORD. I smile when I think about a Japanese man. born and reared in Canada. having a career teaching English in American universities. and then going even further to write books explaining semantics and the role of language in our lives to my follow Americans.
