Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020058728

I have no doubt that President Bush is genuinely committed to achieving democratic reform in China. But the administrations policy will not lead to that result. Two years after the brutal massacre and 1 year after this administration successfully recommended a 12month extension of the JacksonVanik amendment waiver authorityChina has no freedom of the press. no freedom of assembly. no freedom of speech. no freedom of conscience. no right to emigrate. no representative government. and no selfdetermination. What there is in Chinaaccording to the Department of States own reportare thousands of political prisoners. repression spanning the breadth of the country at every level. fear. forced labor. and torture. In short. within the walls of China there is no realistic alternative to political and spiritual bondage.
