The continuation of the SLIAG Program Is critical to the State of Texas. The program was enacted as part of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 to reimburse part of the State and local costs of education. health and public assistance services provided to undocumented Immigrants granted legal status under IRCAs amnesty provisions. In doing so. Congress recognized that legalization would have a major Impact on State and local costs. and that the Federal Government should share responsibility for these costs.
