Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020049755

Mr. President. the Senate will very shortly proceed to consideration of the crime bill. One of the proposals included in the administrations crime bill would create a tribunal which could conduct secret trials and use secret evidence leading to the deportation of resident aliens. Mr. President. our entire judicial system is predicated on the ability of the accused to know what evidence has been charged against him. and to have an opportunity to respond to that evidence. To accept the administrations proposal is contrary to our basic constitutional principles. In todays Washington Post an excellent editorial outlines this troubling legislation.
