I want to thank the gentleman and the gentleman from Texas and the gentleman from Pennsylvania for their leadership on this issue. I spent many years in this House working with the Afghan resistance over the decade of the 1980s. and I must say that they had a tremendous impact on the way the Soviet Union ended up seeking to decentralize. seeking an exist from. to some extent. from communism. glasnost and perestroika. The Afghan resistance was. in many ways. the Achilles heel of Soviet Communist power in the decade of the 1980s. and they sacrificed themselves. They sacrificed their homes. There are 31 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan. They never gave up. They are fighting to this day.
