Undaunted. he struggled to overcome the language and racial barriers that were so prevalent and so much a part of the lives of those hundreds of thousands of Mexican immigrants who migrated to the United States in the wake of the Revolution. Working as a laborer and migrant worker in the fields of California during the 1920s Mr. Lopez lost his wife during childbirth in 1929. because the policy of the rural hospital in the area where he and his family were picking fruits and vegetables was to admit MexicanAmericans on a cash only basis. Possessing inadequate resources to gain proper medical treatment for his spouse. he watched helplessly as his wife died from complications of childbirth in a tent in Santa Clara County.
