Anatoly was employed as an electrical engineer at the Ministry of Energy until 1979. when the family first applied to emigrate. Since that date. the Brenners have been repeatedly denied exit permission on secrecy grounds despite the fact that Anatoly never dealt with security matters on his former job. The Brenners have become completely demoralized as more and more of their friends have been allowed to leave the Soviet Union. while Anatolys former department head. the Minister of Energy.
