Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020038251

President. yesterday. Senators SIMPSON. DECoNcINi and I introduced a resolution to commend the extraordinary humanitarian relief mission of our troops in aiding the Iraqi refugees. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee reported the resolution unanimously earlier today. and I urge my colleagues to join in paying tribute to this historic relief operation. I am grateful to the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for considering this resolution in .such an expedited manner. The strong support it received today in the committee underscores the overwhelming appreciation in this body and across the Nation for the lifesaving mission our forces carried out to save Kurds and other refugees fleeing Saddam Husseins murderous retribution and violence. Only a month ago. the world watched a massive tragedy unfold. as hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Kurds and Shia fled their homes and villages. Never before in modern times has such a massive and sudden exodus of innocent men. women. and children occurred.
