Community centers also offer a variety of intellectual. social. and recreational activities. They provide myriad programs for the elderly and disabled as well as for child care. The first community centers came into prominence during the second half of the 19th century and became a haven for thousands of people fleeing oppression in Eastern Europe. Through the services rendered by community centers these new immigrants were given the tools and guidance necessary to assimilate into the American way of life. Mr. Speaker. as our community centers enter their second century they have become large. complex facilities meeting specific needs of our communities.
