Burial grounds and other artifacts have been discovered in this area. but many of these discoveries have been lost as the archeological finds are currently located outside the Fort Raleigh site boundaries and remain unprotected. The area also includes the site of at least one Civil War fortFort Hugerwhich was built by the Confederacy. Later. after the North captured Roanoke Island. the area was the site of a refugee camp called Freedmans Village where about 3.000 freed slaves lived during the Civil War. Finally. Reginald Fessenden. one of Americas foremost pioneers in the field of radio communication. conducted Important experiments from a radio tower located in the area proposed for inclusion.
