I would also like to thank his staff who worked very diligently and very long on this particular amendment. Mr. Chairman. this amendment will permit those who were granted political asylum from Poland. Nicaragua. Hungary. and Panama to apply for permanent residency status without having to prove once again that they still meet the definition of refugees under United States immigration law. These people would be permitted 15 months to apply for permanent residency status from the date on which they were originally granted asylum in the United States. We are talking here about 9.000 Nicaraguans. 1.000 Poles. 450 Hungarians. and approximately 350 Panamanians.
