Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010216827

I plan to encourage the State Department to add Denmark to this list. Embassy officials indicate that they would be able to cut between two and four staff positions in the Embassy in Copenhagen alone and would facilitate greater tourist and business travel to the United States. It would eradicate a persistent public relations problem in the form of the eternal question. "why do Danes need a visa to visit America when Americans dont need one to come here?" We issue 80.000 Danish visas a year. denying only 1 out of 600 applicants. We are thus wasting the Danes time and Government resources by continuing to subject them to the visa process. Mr. Chairman. the visa waiver pilot program has worked very well since its inception in 1986. I encourage my colleagues to continue this program and again thank the gentleman from New York for his amendment.
