This cormerative legislation wil continue a tradition I initiated last year when Congress. for the first time. passed and the President signed a resoituion designating October. 1989 as ltallanAmerican Heritage and Cutbu Monftr The ItaianArerican conrity is one of the largest ethnic groups In the United States representing over 20 million American citzes. Their experiences ae not unlike those of other Immigrant groups who have journeyed to our shores seeking greater opportunities and a new and better life. tanm ra like other irmigrant groups. have aspired to the attainmwnt of the American dream and their contruons have helped shape the great tapestry of the United States. The designation of October as italianAmedcan Heritage and Culture Month will honor Christopher Co u and his unique piece in Ameican history and will feature the many contributions and achieverets of Italians and ItalianAmeicans. in every facet of lfe in these United States. In addition. a key objective of this commemoration will be to acquaint the American public with the lesser known personages such as Wliam Paca. an original s of the Declaration of Independence.
